The Marlborough Arts Center is pleased to present a Quilt Show and Celebration of the life of Lillian “Jill” Chase (July 10, 1945 – July 6, 2024) on two weekends during February.
A reception will be held at the Arts Center on Thursday, February 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The show will be open on the weekends of February 15, 16 and 22, 23 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
Lillian Chase was born and raised in Provincetown, MA. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island and the University of Hartford, she taught Junior High School science in Glastonbury for 11 years and substituted for many years in Marlborough and Hebron. After leaving teaching, Jill used her time to pursue her wide-ranging interests, which included cooking, gardening, volunteering at the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, and fostering dogs that were retired from service.
Lillian was also interested in sewing, which evolved into quilt-making. She found joy in discovering new fabric stores and art shows across the country. For 30 years, she showed her work at craft and art shows throughout Connecticut, winning awards for her quilts at Danbury, Fairfield and Durham shows. One of her quilts was shown at the CT State Quilt Contest and another at the Eastern States Exposition in Massachusetts. Her quilts were admired for incorporating her remarkable sense of color with traditional patterns.
Her husband, David Chase, and other family members will be available during the open hours of the show to answer questions about the quilts on display. David says that Jill always had a quilt in the process of making, and that as they traveled, they would visit quilt shops. Jill loved to buy fabric and David helped by lugging bolts of it.
Features of the show include a display of several hand-made quilts crafted by the late Lillian Chase. In addition, there will be quilting demonstrations, quilting fabric will be offered for sale, and one of Lillian Chase’s hand-made quilts, valued at over $2000.00, will be awarded as a raffle prize. Raffle tickets, at three for $10.00, can be purchased during these times. The raffle date will be announced in the near future.
